To use her words “unitytheatre has provided arts based activities for children aged 5 – 13 years for well over a decade. It seemed like a logical progression to develop a project for the next age group up and the Heritage Lottery Fund made it possible to create a UYT project as part of unity theatre’s 25th Birthday celebrations.” Through the research UYT members did in developing the production, the group’s discovery of the roots of unity theatre as a passionate theatre movement fuelled by social injustice and the desire to provide theatre for the masses, inspired the young people to explore how people used theatre to raise awareness of social injustice. I n June/ July 2005 UYT performed their first ever production, “History in the Making” running over 4 sell out nights at unity. They chose Make Poverty History campaign and the timing of the G8 summit and Hyde Park Concert could not have been planned better as our performances took place in the same week. UYT were invited to perform extracts from the play as part of the Liverpool Children’s Festival and also at Liverpool World Museum. The Heritage Lottery Fund again supported UYT through their second major performance project, “Times Like These”. This time the focus of the groups’ heritage research was on youth, popular culture and social history from the 1950’s post war Liverpool to the present day. This time the research began a little closer to home with UYT members quizzing parents and grandparents as to their teenage crushes and must-haves. “Times Like These” premiered at unity in September 2007 once again to packed out audiences. unityyouth Theatre founder Helen Flooks passed away in February 2008. To honour her plans to stage “Times Like These” in the capital of culture year, UYT performed the play in September 2008. During the winter of 2008/09, UYT made a short film “Play for Time” which premiered at unity in the spring 2009. Entirely written, designed and storyboarded by the members themselves, the storyline is based on a youth theatre that faces closure in the light of property redevelopment and funding cuts. |
